libGL is the OpenGL library on Linux. So replacing it shouldn't work, unless the problem is with Impress and cairo on your machine is linked to a b0rk3d glitz (which does OpenGL rendering for cairo).
Well whether it should or shouldn't work, it works
Here is where I got the info from eventually... http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=185033 Something to do with ATI drivers, Radeon cards, Dell D600 latitudes, etc.
That is an odd one alright, I have not had that issue. I am using kubuntu dapper 6.06 on a ThnikPad T60p
Are these the propritery drivers? If so, they replace the OpenGL libs with their own infestation. I've had similar problems with NVidia. Propritery drivers are bad.
Well its a clean install, so I doubt they are propietary drivers, at least I don't think they would be in the default install. I'm not sure though.
I just read the thread. Those issues seem to be specifically due to the propritery ATI frglx drivers. Unofortunatly all graphics drivers suck on all platforms (except the open-source Intel on Linux). I've had numerous issues lately with NVidia on Linux and NVidia on Windows. The drivers are optimised for speed without giving a thought to reliability. The fast-path is really fast, but if you stray outside it you'll bring your system down.
My OO.o was not opening at all, except for the splash page. I did not receive any errors, just no program at all. I had recently updated my graphics drivers to the latest ATI drivers, but never tested the OO.o functionality. I mean, why would you? Anyway, This fix totally worked for me. I am happily composing a class assignment as we speak.
Thank you!
Thanks for the great tip! Worked like a charm on my laptop. I was reading other posts who say it's related to the ATI driver/xorg config (which is the same config on my laptop). My Desktop PC, which uses the nVidia driver didn't have this problem. Just a thought.
Thanks again! Jay
Jay,
The NVidia drivers also replace the system GL libraries. It just seems that NVidia don't screw up as bad as ATI here. Though my experience with NVidia cards is that they suck. I helped set up a 24 monitor display system, which drove the cards beyond breaking point. If the drivers were open-source I would've been able to fix the bugs, but they're not
Thanks, I have a Dell D600 and this was my problem. Never really thought it would be my video driver that caused the problem as it did work at one point. Thanks for the fix.
No bother lads, As I said I only really mentioned this here so that it'd be easy to find for others.
I ran into this problem tonight (only upgraded to Dapper yesterday). But now both OpenOffice and e.g. fglrxinfo (gives correct info) work again. Thanks!
worked for me too on my HP laptop, thanks! I am new to linux and I tried reinstalling oo originally, I definetly would not solve this myself.
