Why is it that companies see the need to fill their homepage with some meaningless waffle, when a simple short explanation of what they do would be so much more effective? A comprehensive study of website visits recently revealed that you have approximately 2 seconds to hold onto a user, once they land at your site. Thats why I think we've seen a rise of 3 word slogans (i.e. Store,Share,Search or Listen,Rip,Burn, or whatever). You let the visitor know immediately what it is you do, and they can make a quick decision about whether to stay or not. Some people seem to be clinging on to management speak as if their job depends on it. On second thoughts, I am sure many peoples job does) Here are some real world examples... We make web-based private communications systems networks which build your communities. So exactly do you do? GroupFactor.com Here is another example... Our international network sets us apart. The expertise of our people, combined with our network of business leaders and corporate relationships, underpins the value that we deliver. So what exactly do you do? 3i.com I used to get that question all the time regarding Nakatomi, but looking back I think I was providing more information than these guys. Compare that with say CatsInSinks.com Its about cats in sinks. No messing around there, I can make an informed decision with 2 seconds. What about Flickr? flickr The best way to store, search, sort and share your photos Once again getting to the point quite quickly, another great example is Banshee With Banshee you can easily manage, and listen to your music Anyone else got any good examples of websites that really hold back on the information?
