This is a very short post about giving yourself handy and more usable URLS, for your blog in this case Easy to remember URLs are really important. One of the things I hate about del.ici.ous is that I never remember how to spell it. I know the word, but haven't a clue where the dots go. Some people understand this really well. For example, what is the name of that product that Fog Creek do that allows you to help someone solve computer problems remotely. Is it sidepilot.com or copilot.com? So you open up a browser and you acccidentally type http://www.copiolt.com/ OR http://www.copliot.com/ or even http://www.sidepilot.com and you end up there anyways. Thats how you make things easy for people. Not too many people can spell serendipity, unfortunately many Minds users including myself follow the guide on how to set your own blog up which leaves you with a blog at ~/public_html/serendipity/. Wouldn't it be handier if it was just ~dez/blog/? Here's how to you do that .
For technical peopleWhat that does is it tells Apache that all incoming requests for the folder blog should be pointed at the actual blog folder. Your .htaccess file can control certain aspects of how apache behaves when serving content from the folder its in. Linkage

Maybe I'm doing things really badly but I tend to just make simlinks to the alternatives.
ln -s ~/public_html/serendipity ~/public_html/blog Am I being stupid or is that also an acceptable way of doing things?
Well it works, but it does leave you with an extra symbolic folder in your public_html directory. Also, I think my approach scales better, in that if you had to do 4 or 5 redirects symlinks would get unmanageable.
Whats nice about this is all your redirects are in one place. |
