Hi,
I'm very interested in your opinion about the reddit's comments on the article "What is LaTeX and Why You Should Care," especially ones made by Lucretius (which I deeply agree): What is LaTeX and Why You Should Care (reddit.com) http://programming.reddit.com/info/lf4q/comments# As Lucretius says, why should we bother with such a niche tool?
Hi Lucretius,
In short We should bother with all niche tools, because there are very few unifying standards. The arguments Lucretius makes are correct, Latex fills a niche that Microsoft Word does not. That is the singlemost important argument for LaTeX. He talks about Academic departments like there are only about 10 of them. In reality , a huge chunk of academia uses LaTeX because it is a better tool for their job, i.e. preparing scientific documents. I personally don't think that everything should be prepared in LaTeX, it's not a tool for normal users. It's too difficult to use, and is basically a badly written heap of crap, but unfortunately when you look at the demands of scientists combined with the inertia of publishers then LaTeX is the best badly written heap of crap out there. Thats all I have to say about that. Des |
